JUDAH SLAVKOVSKY, M.D.
Dr. Judah Slavkovsky (SHS Class of 1999). Humanitarian, Teacher, Surgeon.
While at SHS, Judah enjoyed spending time learning to navigate and climb in the forests and
mountains around Sisters. He ran cross-country and distance events in track. He found
friendship in the drama club. Dr. Slavkovsky attended the University of Portland, graduating
in 2003 with a biology degree. This included time researching the Caribbean spiney lobster
in the balmy waters of the Turks and Caicos Islands and kindled a love of the sea. He spent
the subsequent year trying to understand the world’s needs, working in the West Bank,
Palestine as a human rights worker, and later with tuberculosis and chronic wound patients
in Ethiopia. He then attended Harvard Medical School, graduating with a MD in 2010.
Dr. Slavkovsky completed a general surgery residency in 2017 at Swedish Medical Center in
Seattle, Washington, later practicing as a trauma and general surgeon in the Pacific
Northwest. He now works and teaches at the University of Illinois, performing emergency
and trauma surgeries there. Frequently he takes time away to assist in areas of active
conflict, instructing colleagues facing the carnage of war and working in solidarity with them.
This has included regular trips to wartime Ukraine and the better part of a year spent in a
small hospital in rural Afghanistan.
Dr. Slavkovsky’s life is a testament to excellence, compassion, and an unwavering
commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
